I was Head of Drama at a State Secondary School until my retirement in 2015. I taught Drama at A level, GCSE and Key Stage 3 for many years.
I am also a linguist, having a degree in French and taught Modern Foreign Languages for many years alongside my Drama teaching. I directed a production of La Cantatrice Chauve (The Bald Prima Donna) in French while at university.
Now I am retired, I have started to write plays and am currently working on two plays set in the two world wars, one for radio, the other a full-length stage play.
I have directed numerous school productions over the years. These have included plays such as The Crucible, Grimm Tales, The Barratts of Wimpole Street and Romeo and Juliet, as well as full-scale musical productions including Fame, The Sound of Music and Oliver!. In addition, I directed abridged versions of Shakespeare plays for the Shakespeare Schools Festival.
With my A level students, I worked with many professionals who delivered workshops for me, including Kerry Frampton, Naomi Paxton and Jessica Swale. I was delighted that Jessica, who is an ex-student at the school where I was teaching, allowed me to adapt her play Bluestockings and mount a production of it as part of my A level students’ course.
I have also had a career in amateur dramatics, directing productions such as The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and played a variety of roles including Charlotte Corday in Marat/Sade, Mari in Little Voice, Susan in Abigail’s Party and Olwen Peel in Dangerous Corner.
A few years ago, I went to France three times to participate in lectures publiques of a play about Sigmund Freud, Vienne 1938, playing Anna Freud.
