The play is based on the experiences of John Grano, a musician who was imprisoned in a debtors’ gaol between 1728 and 1729.
The prison had a Master’s Side for the gentry and a Common Side for the poor. On the Common Side most died from starvation or disease. It was best to stay on the Master’s Side.
The devastating effects of debt remain an issue to the present day.
