At the start of the nineteenth century the world is turning upside down and a great military power has ‘bitten off more than it can chew’. A minor part of the great power’s army is encamped on the banks of a river that flows into the Baltic. Here, a young artillery officer finds himself trapped by out-of-date military tradition and protocol. In this macho and misogynistic world, callous and brutal acts of violence are often dismissed by unsympathetic attitudes.
