This was a private rehearsed reading in the garden of Paddy Gormley’s home, to celebrate and encourage Paddy’s recovery from recent surgery.
Paddy writes:
“Doctor, Doctor is the first act of an abandoned adaptation of Molière’s doctor plays, dating from the late 1990s. I started with Argan’s opening monologue from Le Malade imaginaire, and went skipped over to Le Médecin malgré lui, in order to import the vengeful wife Martine. This led me to set up a thrilling end to the first act... only to find that I had boxed myself into a corner from which there was no escape.
If I were to revisit this project (I have no plans to do so) I would probably stick with Le Malade imaginaire and take the usual liberties as translator/adapter.”
