Don Quixote in Algiers

by Dermot Murphy

Read by AWL on 4 February 2008

Miguel de Cervantes is in his third year of captivity in Algiers, and longs to escape. His new master, Si Ali, makes him an offer that will at least get him out of his dungeon. However, when he joins Ali’s household, he finds that Ali’s daughter, Zohra, wants him to help her escape to Spain. It could be a trap to test his loyalty, and he is being closely watched by Carmen, Ali’s Spanish concubine who brought Zohra up. Zohra has money, and Miguel has a strong belief in liberty, so one more attempt to get away is tempting.
